Why homeowners in Florida look at solar
Power prices keep climbing
The U.S. Energy Information Administration puts the average U.S. home electricity price at 16.5¢/kWh in 2024 and 17.3¢ in 2025, and projects 18.2¢ for 2026.1 Your own rate depends on your utility.
Lock in part of your power cost
Electricity your panels make is electricity you don't buy at whatever the utility charges next year. How much of your bill that covers depends on your roof, usage and local rules, so ask each installer to show their math.
Backup when the grid goes down
Panels alone usually shut off during an outage for line-worker safety. Pair them with a battery and the right setup, and you can keep chosen circuits like the fridge, lights and internet running.
Buyers have paid more for solar homes
A Zillow analysis of 2018–19 sales found homes with solar sold for 4.1% more on average.2 A Berkeley Lab study of 2002–2013 sales in eight states found buyers paid a premium for owned (not leased) systems.3 Results vary by market and system.
Local incentives
Ask each installer how your utility credits extra solar power, what the system will produce on your roof, and how lease, loan and cash options compare.
Little upkeep
Panels have no moving parts, and most need only an occasional check. Manufacturers and installers offer warranties, which differ by product, so compare the warranty terms in each quote.

FAQ
Does a solar installer need a license in Florida?
Florida's Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) licenses solar contractors (CV and RV licenses) and electrical contractors. You can check a company at https://www.myfloridalicense.com/wl11.asp. Ask for the license number before you sign.
How does net metering work in Florida?
Florida's investor-owned utilities must let rooftop solar customers net meter (PSC Rule 25-6.065). Municipal utilities and co-ops run their own net metering programs.
